Apprenticeship Program
Applicants who have been accepted into the Apprenticeship Program join 12-16 other apprentices in a six-month training process. Apprentices are connected with a mentor and placement organization for practical experience. The apprentice and mentor develop an organizing workplan focused on implementing the basics of community organizing and racial justice work.
During the six months of training, apprentices meet two days a month for intensive community organizing training. During these sessions, apprentices deepen their capacity to understand the basics of community organizing, developing leadership, and building community power. Since 2006, OAP has included racial justice curriculum aimed at deepening the capacity of apprentices and mentors to organize for racial equity.
OAP works with a growing pool of effective trainers who connect the basics of community organizing with on-the-ground organizing experience. To learn more about the trainers, click here.
While there is no monetary cost for the Apprenticeship Program, there is an expectation that apprentices will participate fully at all training sessions scheduled. In addition, there is an equal expectation that mentors will invest in the development of the apprentices, creating a workplan and meeting regularly to assess progress.
